Supporting LGBTQIA+ Youth in Foster Care
June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and its many contributions to our society. It is also a time to reflect on the challenges LGBTQIA+ youth in foster care face.
LGBTQIA+ youth are disproportionately represented in the foster care system. According to the Williams Institute at UCLA Law School and Human Rights Campaign, LGBTQIA+ youth comprise about 20-30% of the foster care population, even though they only represent about 7% of the overall youth population. While in foster care, LGBTQIA+ youth are more likely to experience mental health challenges, substance use issues, and bullying and are more likely to attempt suicide.
We need to ensure support for our youth in foster care and their transition to adulthood. By providing LGBTQIA+-affirming programming and resources, we can work to create a safe and inclusive environment for all youth. Providing this support can help youth thrive and reach their full potential.
