National Suicide Prevention Week

September 10-16 is National Suicide Prevention Week; however, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) recognizes the entire month of September as National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Recognizing the gravity of this issue, the AFSP extends its efforts throughout September to engage the public in creating awareness, encouraging conversations, and ultimately, saving lives.

This year, AFSP introduce the Talk Away the Dark campaign, designed to illuminate the shadows surrounding suicide. Through compelling film and personal stories like One Man’s Road to Recovery, shareable social graphics, and resources for talking to others about suicide and mental health, the campaign seeks to empower us all to make a difference. It reminds us that we can play a crucial role in our communities by recognizing the warning signs, understanding the risk factors, and engaging in open and honest conversations with those we care about.

To make a meaningful impact during National Suicide Prevention Month, here are a few ways you can get involved:

ü  Join a Local AFSP Chapter and Out of the Darkness Walks: Participate in their Out of the Darkness Walks to raise awareness, remind us that suicide can be prevented, and that no one has to face it alone.

ü  Advocate for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Let your voice be heard by advocating for support for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, as well as other mental health policies that can make a difference. Spread the word about 988 to those we serve, friends, and loved ones.

ü  Educate with Talk Saves Lives: Deepen conversations and understanding of AFSP’s program, Talk Saves Lives. Explore specialized modules, including TSL: Latinx and Hispanic Communities, which aligns with National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15).

ü  Educate yourself about the facts about suicide in your area and the resources available.

ü  Connect people at risk with help. Check in with them until they do.

While we recognize this month dedicated to suicide prevention, remember that the impact of our actions extends beyond September. Our commitment to raising awareness, fostering open conversations, and supporting those in need can make a difference every day of the year. Let's Talk Away the Dark and shine a light on the importance of mental health and suicide prevention. Together, we can create a brighter, more compassionate future for those we serve and those we love.
